Is Affiliated Baseball Back In Wichita?

The Wichita Wingnuts have played their last game at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, now, what’s next for Wichita’s baseball future?

A Triple-A club fro the Pacific Coast League, the New Orleans Baby Cakes, recently filed a Relocation Application with Minor League Baseball seeking relocation to Wichita. Before this can happen, Minor League Baseball, the Pacific Coast League, and the Baseball Office of the Commissioner must all review the application.

The New Orleans Baby Cakes are currently affiliated with the Major League Miami Marlins. Wichita has not had an affiliated team since the Wichita Wranglers left the city in 2006.

The official decision is expected later this year.

“We’ve worked tirelessly on this deal. It’s not just about another great quality of life amenity, or baseball: this is about investing in our city and continuing to make Wichita a regional destination.” said Mayor Jeff Longwell.

Lawrence Dumont Stadium is scheduled to be torn down within the year, and the new stadium construction will begin by using STAR bonds, which capture sales tax revenue within a specific development to repay the State of Kansas for project costs.
